c21 was delighted to receive funding from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland’s National Lottery fund to produce an online production of Tom Rowntree-Finlay’s new play Brenda’s Baby.

We will be in rehearsals and filming throughout May 2022 and post-production will take place in June before the release date on our YouTube channel (TBC).

There will also be a series of workshops carried out throughout Northern Ireland in association with Women’s Aid NI.  These workshops will include live excerpts from the play and a panel discussion.

Brenda’s Baby was commissioned by c21 in 2020.  Writer Tom Rowntree-Finlay completed a first draft at the start of 2021 and we were ready to go into production at the start of April 2022.

The content of the piece will help break down the wall of silence that exists around domestic abuse.  The story explores the struggle of a mother who has her newborn taken into care after only five days, due to her drug addiction.

The resulting fight to get her child back sees her also struggle to manage the impact a controlling partner has on her life.
